Frequently Asked Questions
Shelter House and homelessness
- How many people can stay at Shelter House?
- Shelter House has the capacity for up to 29 people per night. Due to lack of space, Shelter House must turn away approximately 10 people each night.
- Why isn't the shelter enlarged?
- The current shelter is located in a residential neighborhood and cannot be enlarged because of limited land. Shelter House has purchased land in another neighborhood, but cannot build on that land until a lawsuit regarding a necessary exception to the zoning has been settled.
- What causes homelessness in Iowa?
- The main causes of homelessness in our area can be traced to a lack of affordable housing, low paying jobs, and domestic violence. Very few people choose to be homeless. The vast majority become homeless due to one or more financial crisis.
- How many people are homeless in Johnson County?
- 1,575 people were served by Shelter House in 2005, this equals about 1% of the Johnson County population. About 40% of those served were women and children
- Who may stay at Shelter House?
- Almost anyone may stay at the shelter. However, Shelter House does not allow those who are intoxicated or who are identified as convicted child predators. Shelter House is a general-use shelter, which means that we serve men, women, and children under one roof.
- What is the Overflow Project?
- Shelter House is filled to capacity almost every night of the year and is often forced to turn away men, women, and children due to lack of space. From November until March, local churches work with Shelter House to provide additional space for those who would otherwise be out on the street. These local faith communities provide space and volunteers to staff temporary shelters in order to provide a safe, warm place for those in need.
