Get Involved
There are a number of ways to become involved with Shelter House. We are able to accommodate short term volunteers (needing 10 hours or less), long term volunteer opportunities (above 10 hours, usually divided by 1-2 hours per week), and groups of 2 or more people. Please see below for our upcoming volunteer opportunities that involve only a one time commitment.
Click here for a letter from our Volunteer Coordinator with F.A.Q’s about our volunteer program.
Click here to download a copy of the Shelter House Volunteer Application. Please print this application or go to Shelter House to pick up an application if you are unable to print one. Once you have completed the application you can submit it by faxing it to Megan DeMeulenaere, the Volunteer Coordinator at 319-351-2137, mail it to P.O. Box 3146, Iowa City, IA 52244, or drop it off at Shelter House located at 331 N. Gilbert Street in Iowa City. You must include a photo copy of your government issued photo identification card when you submit your application.
Another great way for you or your organization to get involved at the shelter is to provide and serve a dinner to our residents. We serve 30-40 homeless men, women, and children every night. You or your organization can sign up to provide a dinner by following this link.
If you are interested in serving on the Shelter House Board of Directors, contact Executive Director Crissy Canganelli at (319) 338-5416, extension 102.
During the winter months, several local churches work with Shelter house to provide additional overnight housing space through the Overflow Project. If you or your church are interested in participating, please contact Christine Mullen at (319) 337-5716.
