Programs
In addition to temporary housing, Shelter House also offers many supportive services that help individuals and families make the transition to more stable, productive lives.
Short Term and Transitional Shelter
Each year, SHelter House provides shelter to hundreds of men, women and children. This includes overnight housing, breakfast and an evening meal, bathing and laundry facilities, a mailing address and a place to receive phone calls and messages.
Drop-in Center
From 5pm-10pm daily, Shelter House operates a drop-in center to provide services to those not able to stay overnight at the shelter. These services include an evening meal, bathing and laundry facilities, and a place to receive mail and phone messages.
In-house Counseling
Anyone planning to stay at Shelter House for more than a few days will participate in the in-house counseling program. This program helps clients access community resources, develop short and long-term goals, and maintain gainful employment. Shelter House clients are expected to save up to 75% of their earnings during their stay and put this money toward setting up their own households.
John E. Thomas Security Deposit Assistance Program
In July, 2001, Shelter House created this program through a private gift from former Shelter House staff member John E. Thomas. This program helps individuals and families secure rental housing with an average of less than $100 in Shelter House assistance per household. Client contributions, outside donations and assistance from other organizations help to secure the full deposit amount.
STAR Program
The Supported Training and Access to Resources (STAR) Program provides comprehensive case management services including life skills training, educational assistance and child care services as well as referrals to substance abuse and mental health counseling.
