Shelter House is a non-profit organization that has provided housing and supportive services to the homeless of Southeast Iowa since 1983.

Shelter House is Johnson County, Iowa's only general use homeless shelter, providing transitional shelter to men, women, and children, including the disabled and the elderly.

Shelter House is the catalyst and voice for systemic community change in the pursuit of ending homelessness.

United Way of Johnson CountyShelter House is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization. As a partner agency of the United Way of Johnson County, we have successfully met all local membership accountability standards in finance, ethics, governance, and diversity.

Administrative Assistant

If you are looking to jump start your career in human services, Shelter House has a great opportunity! We are currently a hiring part-time administrative assistant to work Monday-Friday from 12PM-5PM in a shelter setting providing support and assistance for those who are experiencing homelessness and assiting Shelter House with day-to-day operations. The position is approximately 25 hours/week. Ideal candidates will be those who have a postive/caring attitude, good organization skills, and the ability to handle a stressful environment. Fresh Starts Vocational Coordinator

Shelter House seeks a full-time Fresh Starts Vocational Coordinator to begin immediately.  The Vocational Coordinator will manage a Fairweather Lodge employment program for adults with chronic mental illness who are experiencing homelessness.  The Vocational Coordinator will supervise both Fresh Starts janatorial staff and temporary janitorial interns through the Shelter House STAR case management program.  This is a full time position with benefits. HVRP Retention Specialist

Shelter House is seeking a part-time Retention Specialis for the Homeless Veterans' Reintegration Program (HVRP) for a contracted period ending April 2016.  HVRP intends to assist eligible veterans by providing job placement services, job trainging, conseling, support services, and other assistance to expedite the reintegration of homeless veterans into the labor force. Overnight/Evening Shelter Coordinator

 If you are looking to jump start your career in human services, Shelter House has a great opportunity as we are currently hiring part-time shelter coordinators to work evenings and overnights in a shelter setting providing support and assistance for those who are experiencing homelessness. All positions are approximately 20 hours/week. Ideal candidates will be those who have a positive/caring attitude and have flexible scheduling. Click here for more information. Facilities Coordinator

Shelter House is hiring a part-time facilities coordinator to do general maintenance for 4 properties that are agency-owned in Iowa City.

Key Responsiblities:

  • Ensuring all Shelter House-owned properties meet various codes as determined by City Codes and standards of state and federal partner.
  • Managing and completing the day-to-day maintenance of agency properties within a prescribed budget.
  • Assuring all Shelter House-owned properties are safe to use for clients, staff, and volunteers.
  • Maintaining the exterior and grounds of the faclities on a regular basis.
  • Repairing damages to property promptly.
  • Responding quickly to emergency situations (basement flooding, storm damage, etc.)

Ideal candidate will have knowledge of plumbing, heating, mechanical, and general repair skills. Interested candidates should e-mail resume and 3 references to mark@shelterhouseiowa.org.

  • $25 will sponsor a night of shelter and supportive services for a person who is homeless in our community.
  • $100 will sponsor a night of shelter and supportive services for a family in need.
  • $175 will sponsor a week of shelter and supportive services for someone trying to restart their life.

Donations can be made in any amount to Operations.
