Community Shelter and Transitional Services

Overview of Services

In addition to temporary housing, Shelter House also offers many supportive services that help individuals and families make the transition to more stable, productive lives.

Safe Shelter

Each year, Shelter House provides shelter to hundreds of men, women and children. This includes overnight housing, breakfast and an evening meal, bathing and laundry facilities, a mailing address and a place to receive phone calls and messages.  This is often referred to as Short Term or Transitional Shelter.  [more info]

Drop-in Center

Shelter House offers drop-in services every weekday afternoon from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM and every Satuday and Sunday from 8:00 AM - 11 AM.  Shelter House operates a drop-in center to provide services to those not able to stay overnight at the shelter. These services include showers, laundry, phone calls, access to donations, bus tickets, and outreach.  [more info]

Counseling

Anyone planning to stay at Shelter House for more than a few days will participate in the in-house counseling program. This program helps clients access community resources, develop short and long-term goals, and maintain gainful employment. Shelter House clients are expected to save up to 75% of their earnings during their stay and put this money toward setting up their own households.  [more info]

Employment Program

The Supported Training and Access to Resources (STAR) Program provides comprehensive case management services including life skills training, educational assistance, and child care services as well as referrals to substance abuse and mental health counseling.   [more info]

Shelter House provides support services to help homeless people become independent.  This is a partial list of the services we provide:

Culinary Starts Program

Culinary Starts offers a twelve week training for men and women who are seeking competitive employment in the culinary field. Trainees advance through a rigorous program to become Food Safe and Servsafe Certified and are therefore equipped to work in a variety of food production venues. Through Culinary Starts, trainees increase self-confidence, gain practical skills and experience and are better positioned for a broader range of employment opportunities.

To apply for the training program, contact Phoebe Trepp at: phoebetrepp@shelterhouseiowa.org, or via phone at 338-5416 ext. 240
