Community Shelter and Transitional Services

Thanks to Shelter House Volunteers

Shelter House thanks our many volunteers

In the past year, Shelter House Volunteers have contributed thousands of hours of service. Through your gifts of time and talent:

  • Over 1,000 nights of Overflow Shelter were provided by the congregations of the Consultation of Religious Communities.
  • 124 community meals were provided by various student roups, churches, community agencies, families and friends.
  • Volunteers worked 1,052 hours to clean, maintain, and repair the facility. They answered the phones, sorted donations, served dinner, did office work, and visited with and assisted our clients in everyday needs.
  • Fundraising events raised over $105,000 for operations.
  • The website was reconstructed.
  • On-site mental health counseling was supported by the University of Iowa’s Counseling Psychology Program.
  • We reached our campaign goal of $4 million for the onstruction of the new facility!

Through your efforts, hundreds of men, women, and children have experienced the kindness, hospitality and generosity of this community! On behalf of everyone at Shelter House, the Board of Directors (17 volunteers strong), staff and clients, and in recognition of Volunteer Appreciation Week, we are grateful! You have made a difference in our lives and in our community. You inspire and fortify us and we thank you!

Shelter House can use your help.

Some of the volunteer roles involve direct client service during drop-in and day-time hours, while others are more specialized roles surrounding childcare, educational, and vocational skills.
